Best Time to Go to Austin, TX: A Month-by-Month Guide
Updated: 5 minutes ago

Picking the best time to go to Austin, TX comes down to what you want from the trip: patio weather, festival energy, quieter streets or a day on the water. This guide walks through each season with what to expect from the weather, the crowds and the events, plus what the water looks like, based on what Good Vibes sees on Lake Austin.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Austin?
The short answer: for most visitors, spring (March to May) and fall (October to November) are the most comfortable stretches for time outdoors. Summer is hot and is the season for the water. Winter is mostly mild, with cold fronts that can change the day quickly. Temperatures below are typical highs from the National Weather Service’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Austin.
Spring (March to May): typical highs climb from about 73°F to 87°F, and May is the wettest month of the year. Good for walking, patios and the first lake days.
Summer (June to August): typical highs of about 93°F to 98°F. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early or late in the day and spend the middle of it on the water.
Fall (September to November): September still runs hot at about 91°F, but cooler air arrives in October (about 82°F) and November (about 72°F). The biggest event weekends arrive too.
Winter (December to February): typical highs in the low to mid 60s, with cold fronts that can drop the temperature fast. Layers beat one heavy coat.
If your dates are set by an event, plan around the calendar first. Austin’s biggest weekends change the crowds, the traffic and how early you should ask about everything, including a boat day.
Spring in Austin (March to May)
Spring is the season most first-time visitors picture: warming days, long evenings and enough variety to plan around the weather. Typical highs climb from about 73°F in March to 80°F in April and 87°F in May, with lows from the low 50s to the mid 60s. May is the wettest month of the year, at about 5 inches of rain, so keep a flexible plan for outdoor days.
Wildflower season typically runs March through May, and bluebonnets generally peak from late March into mid-April. The timing shifts from year to year with the weather.
Crowds and events: SXSW fills downtown in March. The 2027 festival runs March 15 to 21, with SXSW EDU on March 13 to 16, so expect busier streets and harder reservations that week.
On the lake: Water temperatures trail air temperatures in spring, so swimming gets more comfortable as the season warms. Unlike Lake Travis, whose level rises and falls with rain and drought, Lake Austin is generally operated within a small range.
Summer in Austin (June to August)
Summer is hot, and the lake is where Austin goes to deal with it. Typical highs run from about 93°F in June to about 98°F in August. Do your walking around in the morning or evening, bring sun protection and expect holiday weekends on the water to be busy.
Crowds and events: Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends are the busiest on Lake Austin.
On the lake: Summer is the busiest season on the water, so the sooner your dates are set, the more options you have. If your dates are flexible, ask about weekdays. For the full breakdown, see our guide to the best month to rent a boat on Lake Austin and our list of water activities in Austin.
Fall in Austin (September to November)
Fall brings cooler air back and some of the biggest event weekends of the year. September still runs hot, with typical highs around 91°F. By October the typical high eases to about 82°F, and November averages about 72°F.
Crowds and events: ACL Music Festival lands on the first two weekends of October (October 2 to 4 and 9 to 11 in 2026), and 2027 dates have not been announced. UT football fills fall Saturdays at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, and the 2027 season opens with home games on August 28, September 4 and September 11. The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix returns to Circuit of the Americas on October 22 to 24, 2027. If you are in town on one of those weekends, book your flights, hotel and any boat day early.
On the lake: Fall stays active on Lake Austin. The City of Austin has named fall weddings, UT football games and Formula 1 among the major events that depend on lake access. If your trip lines up with one of those weekends, ask about boat dates as early as you can.
Winter in Austin (December to February)
Winter in Austin is mild for much of the season, with cold fronts that can drop the temperature fast. Typical highs run in the low to mid 60s (about 62°F in January) and lows in the low 40s. Freezing nights are uncommon, averaging about 12 a year, and in recent normals the first freeze falls around December 1 and the last around mid-February. Pack layers instead of one heavy coat.
Crowds and events: December fills up with holiday events, including the Austin Trail of Lights at Zilker Park, which runs for two weeks in December (December 10 to 23 in 2026).
On the water, Good Vibes runs a Lake Austin Christmas lights cruise. Check that page for current dates and availability. Traveling with kids? Our list of family things to do in Austin is a good place to start.
On the lake: Winter boat days trade swimming for cruising and views, and December adds holiday lights along the shoreline.
Best Time of Year for a Lake Austin Boat Day
If you are visiting Austin and want one day on the water, a few choices matter more than the month: the lake, the boat, the size of your group and how early you book.
A Lake Austin boat day works for different reasons in different months. Late spring and early fall bring warm days that are easier to handle than midsummer: typical highs are about 87°F in May and 82°F in October, against about 98°F in August. Summer is the busiest season on the water and the best fit for swimming and wake sports. Winter is cooler, so cruising, views and the December holiday lights take the lead.
What to bring on any boat day: sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a swimsuit and a towel for summer, layers for winter, shoes with good grip for the deck, and snacks. Check the boat’s cooler and drink rules when you book.
How to plan it: pick your lake first, then the boat, then the date. Ask what the price covers, who is allowed to drive and what happens if the weather turns. Pricing depends on the boat, the lake and the hours, and current rates are confirmed on the booking page.
Thinking about Lake Travis instead? Check current conditions before you plan around it, because its water level varies. LCRA publishes current lake levels.

Best Time to Visit Austin for Festivals and Events
How the calendar affects a boat day: busy event weekends mean full hotels and slower traffic, and the City of Austin counts UT football games and Formula 1 among the major events that rely on Lake Austin. If your trip centers on an event, ask about boat dates as soon as your trip dates are set.
Austin’s calendar is built around a few big weekends. Spring has SXSW (March 15 to 21, 2027). Fall has ACL Music Festival (typically the first two weekends of October), football Saturdays and the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix (October 22 to 24, 2027). December has holiday events, including the Austin Trail of Lights. Event weekends are the busiest to move around in, so if your dates are flexible, you may want the days before or after.
If you are in town for an event and want a boat day, plan the boat day for a different part of your trip, when your schedule has room for it.
